Articles with Mountains, Islands, and Deserts

Geographical features are physical places on Earth, like mountains, islands, deserts, and valleys. The article you use depends on whether the place has a proper name (a specific name) or is a general geographical feature. Most geographical features use the definite article 'the' before their names. This is different from many other nouns in English.

The with Mountain Ranges, Island Groups, and Plural Features

Use "the" with mountain ranges, island groups, and plural geographical features: the Rocky Mountains, the Alps, the Caribbean, the Andes.

Single mountains do NOT use "the": Mount Everest, Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji. (Note: We use "Mount" before the name or use the name alone, but never "the" before a single mountain.)

Feature Type Examples
Deserts the Sahara Desert, the Kalahari
Canyons the Grand Canyon, the Valles Marineris
Forests and rainforests the Amazon Rainforest, the Black Forest
Valleys the Silicon Valley, the Nile Valley

No Article with Continents, Countries, and Lakes

Do not use an article with continents, countries, cities, or most single lakes. Say: Africa, France, London, Lake Victoria (not 'the Lake Victoria'). The main exception is when a country name includes common nouns like 'kingdom,' 'republic,' or 'states': the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands.
